First post

Welcome to my first post, and thanks to Maggi dawn  for the questions to get me started, as a sort of offshoot of the interview game going on elsewhere.   

Why do you want to start blogging?  What is it about other blogs that has inspired you to have a go?  (two questions here surely....)

As part of my training I'm expected to keep a learning journal, reflecting (theologically and otherwise) on the course, life, the universe etc.  But I've never managed to keep a journal:  the idea of writing for myself alone doesn't make sense and I worry away looking for the perfect word or phrase, then worry if I'm crafting it away from the truth, then I start again, and so on.  Paradoxically, writing for even a quasi public potential audience feels as if it might help to reduce the effect of that introspective self consciousness since there would be a reason to stop - to get it posted.  Whether it will help with or substitute for the learning journal remains to be seen!

I love the mix of intellectual discussion , personal reflection and domestic detail on eg  Good in Parts  and Storytellers World  - and maggi's site.   "Rooted" is one of my favourite words, and the blogs I like most are just that - palpably rooted in real lives, communities, landscapes.

Also, I'm not sure its respectable to lurk indefinitely..... at least, not for me.

Tell us a bit about your life - what do you do, what kind of place do you live in, what kind of household or community do you belong to?

I live in South London with my husband, two cats and usually two sons  (13 and 18), but 18 is away on his gap year teaching in Sri Lanka, and shortly moving on to South Africa, while trying to decide between Durham and Edinburgh for his degree in philosophy and theology (about as practical as my own degree in English).  So after the endless slog of GCSE, AS (I agree with Giles F) and A level alongside 18, I'm enjoying having time to get to know 13 better.

I've been in and around the Civil Service ever since graduating 30 ish years ago, including a rollercoaster ride through the near collapse of the asylum system around the turn of the century (an odd phase to apply to one's own life, but accurate)  and latterly as a manager in the  Magistrates' Courts Service in London.  BUT.....

.... in three weeks time I take early retirement as part of a big reorganisation.   I plan to do some consultancy and spend more time on the other major element of my life, training for Ordained Local Ministry.   OLM s are parish based priests (perpetual  curates in effect), selected and trained to work in their parishes.  Training, run by the Diocese of Southwark in my case, is very hands on and local - rooted even -  and involves the parish in a commitment to collaborative ministry - which is easy to commit to and less easy to do in practice.  Biblically the restriction to the parish doesn't exactly work, but I suspect it will be reviewed in due course unless there is a major upturn in numbers of ordinands generally.  I've been training for nearly a year (a year this week since the selection conference - still a vivid memory!) and there are eight of us in my year, a really strong support group already - late night e mails currently winging around asking why on earth we thought this was a good idea, as assignment deadlines collide with real life!

My other community is my much loved parish church, in a nondescript part of South London under the shadow of the Crystal Palace radio mast (and close to the dinosaurs, Maggi), which is trying hard to be community focused, open, warm, welcoming, evangelical, liturgical and reflective - and managing it,  except when we don't. 

Will your blog be a faith blog?
A shorter answer to the first single question!  I'm not sure quite what a faith blog is.  Probably partly yes - given the above it ought to be.  But there will be other things too  - see above on rootedness and journalling.

Who would your patron saint be and why?

Benedict - vows of obedience, stability and conversion of life are paradoxicla and very relevant to OLM ministry.  And the Rule suggests he was superb leader:  rather like Jean Luc Picard, aware of the strengths and frailties of his people and tailoring decisions accordingly.

What faith would you choose if you were not a Christian, and why?

I started to say I'd be a Buddhist, but then I remembered how it was sound Bible-based preaching that brought me back to faith - so I think I probably belong with the People of the Book and would have to be  Muslim or  Jewish.  But I don't feel I "chose" to be a Christian - I did run away for 20 years  and when god reeled me back in I kicked and fought in a manner reminiscent of CS Lewis but with less intellectual respectability (he is my other patron saint).  and with a partner deeply opposed to all forms of religion it would be easier ot have chosen not to....  But here I am .

I wonder if, as an OLM in SE twenty something you have contact with one of my fave priests, Nigel Godfrey? He's a Southwark OLM course guru, I think...and also preached at our wedding a scarily long time ago, and modelled how I would love my ministry to be,while he was at Christ Church N Brixton.

Well, yes, Nigel is the OLM Principal and the last e mail I opened before these comments was from him..... His time in N Brixton sounds remarkable, when he can be persuaded to talk about it - there is a story about how his washing got mistaken for jumble or sent for salvage...... we are very lucky to have him. I'll mention you to try and soften him up for a discussion I have to front this weekend about how 6 out of 8 of us managed to misinterpret the instructions for our last assignment, with fairly catastrophic results(not that we care about our marks at all, of course....)

I read an article in the paper about journalling. The results, very basically, were that if the journal is for no one else to read, that it tends to make people dwell on their problems, losing perspective, making problems bigger than they actually are.
The word 'rooted' has different meanings in Australia! It's a polite way of saying one very unpolite word.
